This week we feature AirBear, Compression and Hoppy, three casual games that are perfect to play on-the-go.
Following MonsterKill and Sentinel: Mars Defense, AirBear is Origin8’s February Freebie this weekend. It’s a casual game that shares several values with Doodle Jump but instead of controlling the panda to jump on the platforms, you form the platforms yourself by drawing them with goo. To pass each level you must fling the panda to the top of the room in upwards mode or fall to the bottom in downwards mode. On your way you can collect bamboo and puzzle pieces to gain extra points, but avoid the bombs or they’ll blast off a limb!
AirBear has many scenarios in the main “homeward bound” mode and also includes an endless mode to play if you can grab enough puzzle pieces. OpenFeint comes integrated as standard in Origin8’s games so you can unlock achievements and share highscores. When we reviewed the game we gave it a C so it’s certainly worth downloading for free.
Compression takes its core gameplay from the likes of Tetris and Columns and then crushes it into something different. Your aim is simple: remove all the hollow blocks from the level by forming lines of three blocks of the same colour. However, what’s different about this particular game is that after every third piece you drop, one wall will move inwards decreasing the playing field size. This sounds like a bad thing but once you have mastered the pattern you can use this unique feature to your advantage. Watch the video below for an example of the gameplay:
We’re unsure how long Compression is free for, but if you enjoy the game why not purchase the new Blocked mode for 59p?
In Hoppy you control a cute little red ball and you have to avoid the various other balls as they bounce on screen. Jumping over or under them scores you points, and bouncing over several earns you bonus combo points. There are pickups that you can grab to gain special powers, replenish your health, or just increase your score. It’s a casual and addictive game that has you trying to achieve the greatest number of points, but there is enough variety to keep it alive.

Hoppy is free this weekend, so pick it up soon if you enjoy a quick, casual game!
