A smartly presented puzzle game that is another great example of how touch controls excel at tasks that buttons could hardly replicate. Grade: B

News: New in: Game Feast: 10 in 1 GameBox

Whilst not the first of its kind, Game Feast is certainly an innovative idea; collating 10 indie games together for one low price. We’ve reviewed four (Peter und Vlad, Wheeler’s Treasure, Card Ninja & Kabooma) of the bundled games and can certainly say for its current price of £1.19 it’s a steal. Go pick it up in the App Store!

Review: R TYPE

The fact that it keeps getting ported to each new gaming device is a testament to its appeal and staying power; this iPhone version of the coin-op classic holds true to its roots and is a title that belongs in everyone’s catalog. Grade: A

Rolling a ball of snow down a slope can be good fun; unless you’re a zombie. However the game gets repetitive and won’t stay on your device for long. Grade: D

News: New in: Lyric Legend

Most rhythm games follow the generic concept set out by Guitar Hero, but Lyric Legend strays from the pack into new, more unique territory. Instead of tapping along to a certain instrument, you follow the lyrics word by word as they are sung. Now the challenge here isn’t just to tap the lyrics at the correct time, you have to find the right word among the bubbles of verse. This really tests your reaction speed and allows for five difficulties on each song (the number of bubbles on screen rises as the difficulty increases). Check out our gameplay video below:

Lyric Legend seems relatively undiscovered at the moment, which is surprising since the concept is fantastic and it is available for free. Three songs are included with the game: Gimme Sympathy by Metric, Giving Up the Gun by Vampire Weekend and Move Along by The All American Rejects. You can also purchase 59p song packs which contain two songs from many well known artists such as: Coldplay, Queen, The White Stripes, Owl City and many more. So what are you waiting for? Get it on the App Store now!

News: New in: Epic Citadel

Epic Games demonstrated Epic Citadel at Apple’s special event today; their first demonstration uses the Unreal engine that has been used for countless third party games and it runs impressively on the iOS to say the least. The game is a tour de force of the graphical capabilities of the iPhone and iPad and looks stunning; even though it’s not a game just a demonstration it’s definitely worth a look; we hope many games powered by this engine are forthcoming.

Epic Citadel is available in the App Store free of charge.

News: Coming soon: Fishdom HD

Whilst it’s tough to find innovation in a genre densely populated by a myriad of competing titles, Playrix nonetheless impressed us with Call of Atlantis; a game that may have been slightly tainted by heat and stability issues but still remained a finely polished and well crafted title for fans of the puzzle genre.

From the same studio, Playrix, comes Fishdom HD; a matching game set in an underwater environment. Players can earn cash by completing match3 boards and solving puzzles to earn virtual cash. This, in turn, can be used to purchase various types of fish, ornaments and underwater plants to create a customised aquarium. The game comes with an intelligent adaptive difficulty feature that tailors challenge based on your ability; other features include:

Full optimization for the touch screen
Unlimited replayability
Interactive and fully customizable virtual environment
Impressive variety of items and accessories to choose from

The game is expected to be released sometime this month. Head on over to the official website to catch more information on this new title.

News: Update these: Great games just keep getting better

We’ve got quite a few notable updates this time around; of course there’s the customary Angry Birds update with 15 new levels, secrets and achievements—we’ve lost count of exactly how many times the game has been packed yet again with features and each time makes it even better value.

Next up is the recently reviewed Monster Dash; a game that when reviewed had a fair slice of gaming fun to offer but there was a question for us about longevity. Thankfully, Halfbrick are prolonging its life with a bike pickup that mows down the enemy hordes, plus new statistics and best of all a fix for those pesky hearts; often they would be placed in very unforgiving places.

Helsing’s Fire is a puzzle game you shouldn’t pass up on, especially for 59p; with a new campaign, monster variety and improved colourblind support amongst other new features you should really download this one.

I had the opportunity to write a review over at AppAddict.net and the game in question was Solipskier; the game now includes sticky headphones so that if you were getting annoyed with the rock soundtrack abruptly disappearing once you built up enough speed, you’ll be glad to know that’s been fixed. You can now play your own music; bonus!

Osmos has had a few minor fixes and difficulty tweaks but finally you’re able to play your own music; we’re mentioning this one simply because the game’s experience is top drawer however small the update is.

Finally, Carnivores has been updated as a universal app; although the graphics don’t look nearly as good as some of the iPad’s shooter titles the gameplay is surprisingly enjoyable. Additionally, you can now post your results to Facebook.

These are just some of the many games that keep getting better with updates—if you haven’t got any of these games we certainly recommend that you go out and buy them!

News: New in: Zentomino HD

It’s been over a year since the iPhone game Zentomino hit the App Store, but nevertheless it has become a favourite game to pick up; the sheer amount of puzzles it comes with and the no-pressure, save state for multiple puzzles system works so well that it is just a joy to play. The HD version is a little different; you pay nothing up front but any skin/puzzle pack purchase at 59p removes the banner advertising from the game and expands it to full screen. A nifty idea; plus the 105 puzzles you have here that are free of charge definitely make it worth downloading the game.
