Arctic Shuffle 2: A vast improvement!

News by Tom Grimes, August 27, 2009

A while ago we reviewed Arctic Shuffle and four months later zinc roe Design have brought out a sequel.

If you've ever played Arctic Shuffle you'll know that it is a puzzle game with the main mechanics being similar to curling and shuffle board. Your aim is to fire a penguin so that it lands on a target situated somewhere on the screen. This, however, isn't made easy, there are many obstacles that lie in your way; bombs, saws, pools of water, cacti and spikes. There are also switches that you will have to press and snow that you will have to hit in order to get to your target. Have a look at the developers video below for a better idea of the game play:

There are 50 levels that you can play, which are split up into five difficulty levels. While there are less levels than in the previous game, we found that these new levels are better designed and a lot more fun than before. You can also purchase more levels in groups of 25 via DLC which we think is an excellent feature.

Arctic Shuffle 2 also fixes a lot of our complaints with the prequel: The game now gives you a score at the end of each level so there is a purpose to go back and replay it, unfortunately there is no online scoring so it isn't particularly compelling. The game also gives you the option to restart a level from the pause menu which is useful because if you go wrong at the start of the level you no longer have to wait until you lose to start again.

The presentation of Arctic Shuffle 2 is as loveable as ever. The graphics look extremely cute and the music and sound effects are great. You can also mute the music, and sound effects, in order to listen to your own, which fixes one of our previous complains. The menus still lag although we don't see it as a huge problem and the level names are as good as before.

While Arctic Shuffle 2 is a vast improvement on the prequel, we believe that it is more of a big update than a new game. However, if you enjoyed the original and want more of the same, then we strongly recommend you pick up the sequel because it's definitely as fun and addicting.
