Holidays, more fire sales!

News by Ben Briggs, July 13, 2009

This week is holiday week, but that doesn't mean that we're going to take a break from iPhone gaming. There won't be any site posts, but instead we're going to invite you to take a look over our past reviews, as many of the games that we've covered have gone on 59p sales. Whether you agree or disagree with having App Store games this cheap, we're just going to cherry pick the best sales right now so that you know you're getting a great game for less.

Some games get better with time, others get better with updates. That's why we're listing Dungeon Defense here. In our review, we noted that the lack of content cuts short an otherwise fun experience - however, this problem has been rectified with two additional maps and various tweaks. Indeed, it's very innovative, replacing towers with guards that go up to enemies and fight them. Secondly, there's geoDefense, a game that initially had a 59p price point for it's introductory offer - providing more levels than you can shake a stick at, it's a fantastic blend of modern presentational effects and retro minimalism - with each level more like a puzzle that you have to solve. So the difficulty is high, but it's more rewarding when you do finish a level. Finally, we have 7 Cities, which offers both open field and fixed path tower defence - it's iPhone integration is superb, and it has pirates! What's not to like? Anyway, it's one we'd definitely recommend for the normal asking price, so 59p is even sweeter.

If you're not a fan of tower defence, why not check out Chocolate Shop Frenzy - it's rounds are short, easy and therefore a perfect introduction to the world of time management. If strategy is your thing, you might want to check out Galcon, a game that is almost as old as the Store itself - debuting at a top end £5.99 price point, it's one of the few that's still worth that. The strategic gameplay feels fast, fluid and awesome - like a streamlined experience that only focuses on the most important elements of strategy games, and so is definitely worth the paltry 59p - and then some.

Buka is a fun game that reminds us of Asteroids - while it doesn't offer multitouch control (presumably that would make the game too easy), the presentation is excellent and the game itself is very fun. While we don't have a review for this game, AppGamer covered the game, giving it a 9/10. Even from our first impressions we can see that it's very innovative, and so worth the 59p. Similarly, ShapeShape is reduced, another inXile game which makes full use of level creation tools - it's control scheme is innovative and makes the part platformer gameplay just challenging enough. It's worth a look.

It really says something when so many good games are dropping down in price in such a short space of time - but while they're cheap, go pick up a bargain! See you next week.
