8 Track Mind (iPhone)

8 Track Mind is a sleekly presented musical puzzle that has a completely different focus than Audio Puzzle which was covered yesterday. In this title you’ll be recreating a loop from a handful of possibilities that can be toggled on and off with a tap on the screen.

Each part is complementary to the rest, and it is a lot of fun to try various combinations out as you will get a great sounding result every time. It is a shame that this experimental angle isn’t pursued further—a free play sandbox where you could play with tracks would have been a smart addition—but the 20 levels included have enough sonic variety to keep you interested.

We’re big fans of minimalistic but super stylish user interface design and 8 Track Mind has some great design sensibility that really pushes it beyond being simply average. From the icon on the title screen telling you to connect the headphones with a stylish headphone icon and arrow to the instructions that are cleverly displayed whilst you listen to a preview of the full track before trying to arrange it, the cube transitions between menu screens and the pulsating icons that glow in time and brightness according to rhythm and volume respectively, the game is chock-full of great presentation. We don’t expect a music game to allow you to play iPod music as it would be too distracting, but if you leave it on it will still play in the menu screen and only get faded out once you begin a game.

Even though 8 Track Mind is a simple game it is a good one. It’s not going to last a long time, that is for sure—but it is far better than the average puzzle game and a completely different experience from the over-saturated match3 genre. If you’re a fan of ambient/electronic music you will definitely enjoy the backing track, and even if you aren’t this game could persuade you otherwise.

Grade: C, Good

Sounds great, looks great and plays just as well. It is a short game but is a refreshing change of pace for the overcrowded puzzle genre.
