There are many games on the App Store that could easily be put under the category "Bizarrely Awesome" and Battle Bears is definitely one of them. You play Oliver; a robotic bear who is trapped behind enemy lines. You're armed with your trusty rifle and in order to survive, you have to take out wave upon wave of pink bears who are trying to hug you to death. While Battle Bears is simply a survival shooter game, it is honestly like no other.
As soon as you start the game you'll discover what makes Battle Bears so great; its ridiculous and utterly hilarious storyline which is complete with cut scenes. The cut scenes are shown in between each of the five progressively harder stages and alter what happens in the game. The scenery around you along with the weapons you can get change as more of the plot is revealed: You'll gain weapons like the Bearzooka and the Swearaphone and the terrain will slowly degrade; the game gets much darker as you progress. Every stage is split into four levels and in between each one you can go out and collect more ammo for your guns or repair your defences.

The controls in the game are very easy; drag with one thumb to move the cross hair and tap with the other to fire. To change to your secondary weapon, you tap a button in the top left corner, and to pause the game you turn your device 90 degrees (although we'd prefer a pause button). Without having to struggle with bad controls, you'll be able to take out many of the huggable bears with head shots causing their heads to pop off and a rainbow to fly out. As well as the normal pink bears, there are fast orange ones and giant blue ones which are respectively weaker and stronger.
Battle Bears has some pretty good graphics to go along with its bizarre story. It is full rendered in 3D and runs very smoothly, even with lots of enemies on screen. The game is surprisingly polished for something so ridiculous, its menus look wonderful and the war style background music fits in very well. If you want a slightly more gory game you can turn on blood in the settings which will cause the bears to spurt multicoloured blood when shot. The game saves from the last level you were on, so while it doesn't save your exact state, we found the levels short enough for it not to matter.
We finished the story mode of Battle Bears in under an hour and found it to be too easy overall, although the difficulty did ramp up in the last stage. After completing the story mode you unlock survival mode which we were also slightly disappointed by. Like the story mode it was very easy and we found ourselves surviving stage after stage of enemies. At the end of your game you are given a statistics page but while it gives you a lot of cool statistics, it doesn't save them anywhere in the game; so you have to take a screenshot in order to keep them. Battle Bears could be a great survival shooter game but at the moment the game just doesn't last and it's only really good for a quick laugh.
The hilarious storyline is excellent but unfortunately the game itself just doesn't stand up to it.
