Wordulous is another word game from 99Games, this time focusing on a style of gameplay more akin to Text Twist - if you've never played that style of game, it basically involves rearranging a large, scrambled word to form either the original or smaller words. Each correct word will be displayed on the board, along with blank spaces for all the other words that you can create.
It's a simple game which is easy to get the hang of, and of course there will be those who could argue that there's many such games on the App Store. Why would anyone pick this one?
For one reason. It's the best one there is that's currently available. That's thanks to an intuitive scoring system that awards extra time (and therefore points) to larger than three letter words, and docks points for unskillful play. You're also given the opportunity to wipe the field and start over again with a new set of letters. Bonus: when a large word is formed, you get a chance to answer a trivia question where you must unscramble the answer for a good point boost.
The real reason however is the online component - global leader boards, and you can even send challenges to facebook friends from inside the game. A nice touch is the illustrated indication of how you did - you'll receive some positive encouragement even if you did badly at the game. Plus, you can practice your skills in the untimed mode which won't track scores, but lets you play as long as you like.
Presentation is certainly fun, with humourous music and great chalkboard style graphics. The only negative was sometimes with the controls - selecting tiles doesn't feel as fast as it should be, and there's no backspace to delete a word, you must tap each letter. This can be frustrating when you realise that you've made a mistake. However, at 59p it's a great bargain, so we would definitely recommend it for the word addicts amongst you.
Jim and Frank may just be the closest thing to having Professor Layton for the iPhone. It’s a bargain for 59p.
A simple word game that actually works quite well - but it was all too easy to lose interest.
