We’re always on the lookout for titles that utilise an innovative control scheme, if only because they can make the game more fun. Canoe Slalom is a good idea in principle but fails somewhat on the execution; because the steering controls are extremely sensitive even when put on the lowest (default) setting. This obviously has its problems, mostly involving not being able to travel in a straight line for very long; even though there are two choices for what your thumb swipes translate to neither of them seem designed to get you from A to B in a hurry. Normally that would be OK, but after all you’re involved in a slalom in which you have to get the fastest time possible.

Because of this control scheme it is very difficult to get gold or silver medals in the game, even on the slower courses; it just feels frustrating as a result. You just don’t have the control over the canoe that you should.

Not only this, but Canoe Slalom also has a mediocre presentation that’s overly cartoony and dull. For a game that is supposed to offer a somewhat realistic experience, it just comes off as crude. The repetitive splish-splash from your paddling isn’t even accompanied by music unless you play your own.

Canoe Slalom just fails to meet the standards that so many others have set in the App Store. Poor, frustrating controls and bland environments just make for an experience that you’ll forget, delete, and move on. Hurriedly.

Grade: F, Substandard

The execution of this game should be poor by anyone’s standards; unfortunately ours are rather high.
