Cut the Rope is an adorable puzzle game in which you have to feed the sweet-toothed Om Nom his favourite treat; candy that tantalizingly swings from ropes hung on various pegs that are carefully placed into each box. In this 1.0 release there are four different boxes; cardboard, fabric, foil and gift, but there is also a thin outline of another box that promises new levels. Still, for your 59p you are getting 100 levels which is a great deal.
To feed Om Nom couldn’t be easier; you just have to cut the rope in such a way that the candy lands in his mouth. Doing this alone won’t help you unlock the remaining boxes in the game though; they are unlocked by collecting stars and each level has three of them. Collecting the maximum amount of stars is often easy, but there are a handful of levels in there that require perfect timing in order to collect all three. Fortunately the pass requirements to unlock each box are fairly lenient, and so you can experience much of the game without necessarily getting three stars on each level.
All of these are utilised in such a way that each level feels satisfyingly different.
Simply slashing each rope in order to get the candy to Om Nom would wear thin, but new gameplay mechanics are inserted at a healthy rate. Bubbles carry candy upwards, spiders traverse rope to try and steal the candy for themselves, spikes and electricity break the candy if you’re not careful, but what is most interesting is the sliders that you control yourself; some move the peg that the rope is attached to, and wheels in later levels increase or decrease the length of the rope. All of these are utilised in such a way that each level feels satisfyingly different.
Indeed, sometimes the game will test your reactions with stars that disappear after a few seconds, or setups that require one or two perfectly timed slashes to complete. It helps that the slashing mechanic is more like Fruit Ninja than iSlash; you can cut multiple ropes in one slice or even use two fingers.
Certainly, Cut the Rope looks superb; it’s the little things that make the difference here. Om Nom patiently waits for his candy; if it gets near him his mouth springs open, but if it falls off the screen he immediately frowns as if it’s the end of the world; we also love the concept of housing him in different boxes because they’re something new and unique to this game.
Overall, we’re very impressed with Cut the Rope; its clever design coupled with a lovable lead character and charming graphics makes up one superb package. It is also retailing at a bargain basement price, and for that reason we can highly recommend purchasing this one today.
Adorable puzzle game complete with a wide assortment of obstacles and clever design; for 59p we highly recommend Cut the Rope.
