Fox Vs Duck is the latest creation by MrFungFung; a serene, minimalist outing with a striking aesthetic that combines a muted sepia toned palette with a deep red blood colour that eventually permeates the pond and its surroundings. With a lush ambiance constructed of chimes, ripples, bird calls and soft ghostly synthesizers, the atmosphere is as eerie as this title’s premise.
The game is all about survival; from the ducks that you must hurry to the pond’s edge, to the fox on the perimeter and pike lurking beneath the surface. If you are managing to steer the ducks out of harm’s way effectively, the more the predators will try their hardest to outsmart you. You can’t deny them a meal for long; playing the game is a definite balancing act. Staying too long in the water to evade the fox will only draw attention for the pike, whilst being too hurried can lead you right into the fox’s lap. It can be rather intense, as the fox starved of its prey gets increasingly desperate to catch its next meal.
Two different modes are included with the game; a challenge mode where you have a time limit that increases a little when a duck is rescued, and a survival mode that only gives you a certain number of lives although more can be picked up in the pond. Of the two the survival mode is much less hectic and we greatly preferred it over the frantic pace of the challenge mode.
We found only one problem with the game and that is one of control. The accelerometer based scheme works really well for the most part, but you seem to only be able to float the duck in the direction that it wants to go, rather than have full control over its exact path. Yes, the obstructions such as lilypads that can be pushed out of the way—or rocks that can’t—provide a welcome challenge and the game would be too easy without them, but without having that precise control over the ducks you aren’t able to navigate these obstacles with ease.
Thankfully this is only a small, minor issue and doesn’t impact upon the time you’ll enjoy spending with Fox Vs Duck. Don’t let the minimalist exterior fool you into thinking this is a boring game with little substance; this is one bold, cunning and daring 59p gem worth experiencing.
Daringly minimalist in its approach, this sleek looking title really does impress both in its simple gameplay and surreal atmosphere.
