iSplume (iPhone)

  • iPod music: Yes
  • Status bar: No

iSplume is a simple match three game with a twist - by tilting your iPhone, you can swing your Splumes and stick them together to create chains. It's an innovative use of the accelerometer and manages to make the game more than it appears on first glance.

The objective is to clear a given quota of Splumes from the level. You tap to fire a Splume, the first one will stick to the top, and then others will stick to it - the idea being that you match three of one colour. You lose if the screen becomes too full, but if you are smart enough, you can eradicate whole clusters of Splumes by dropping them off the screen when you make a match. Each level gets progressively more difficult, with more colours and sizes for you to match - but there's no sort of survival mode, so once you complete a level you can move on.

iSplume looks attractive with a vector based swirly splotchy background. This is the same for all levels, which is a bit of a shame, given that the design is impressive. The menu system is a little less impressive, sporting generic buttons. This spoils the presentation somewhat - as does the complete absence of audio from the game. This, combined with only one mode of play, makes the game feel rushed to market - we wonder why they're charging for this when you can get a much better experience in your browser for free.

In addition, you can blow through most of the game in less than an hour - yes, there are online leaderboards, but there's not much reward otherwise from the game. 59p doesn't seem too much to pay - but I'd save your money for a more well rounded experience. This game is short lived and unfinished in it's current state.

Grade: D, Mediocre

iSplume has the makings of a good time waster. But it's incomplete, and feels like it was hastily put together.
