iStunt is a game that truly surprised us. With a rather tacky name starting with Apple branded “i”, and honestly mediocre visuals, we didn’t think the game would be any good. Luckily iStunt has some unforeseen brilliance within: its gameplay is fantastically addictive and downright fun. Also as we sped down the various tracks we quickly found that the game has many qualities akin to Jelly Car.

The objective in the game is to reach the finish of each surreal level without crashing. This is easier said than done as every level has a fantastical layout which are always fun, but also challenging. You’ll have to get past massive drops, spinning blades and icy spikes to finish alive, and even then you have a score to concentrate on. Gaining points is done in many ways, you can play it safe and race against the clock to get a decent time bonus, or you can pull off stunts, land your tricks and grab the stars to gain even more.

All of the levels are immaculately designed and take a careful amount of precision and skill to complete. Many of the levels are also creative with paths twisting in different directions, and it is clear that time and effort has been put in to make them. As well as multiple dangers, the game also has a very interesting twist... literally. Zooming past a yellow arrow triggers a gravity inversion which flips the whole game 180 degrees, forcing you to physically rotate your device to continue. Luckily these reversals don’t come without warning as helpful signs are set up throughout the courses to show extreme jumps and intense slopes.

There are currently 20 levels in the game which you can play in both Stunt Mode and Time Trial Mode. The two modes are virtually the same except in Time Trial you are only racing against the clock. The controls for the game are very simple and similar to Jelly Car’s: tilt to rotate your snowboarder, swipe up to jump and swipe down to crouch (in order to dodge blades and pick up speed). You can also pinch to zoom in and out for a better view. Take a look at the developers video below for a snippet of the gameplay:

Aside from iStunt’s graphics we had few problems with the game. We did, however, find it to be a little short. All of the levels are of a high standard but there are only 20 of them. It helps that the game has OpenFeint integrated but it still feels a little bit shallow. Fortunately there is an update coming which adds five more levels, and possibly more in the future. Improved graphics and a new soundtrack are also coming in the update, so we definitely look forward to those.

Grade: B, Great

Its visuals may not be the best, but iStunt is an astonishingly fun game!
