We wrote about N.Y.Zombies a few times before we’d even played the game and praised it back then, and after getting our hands on the game we’re here to do exactly the same thing. Zombie games may be plentiful on the App Store but they aren’t always that great, luckily Foursaken Media have designed N.Y.Zombies around the iPhone and have rightly limited some features. For example there is no real character movement but you can rotate your view 360 degrees, and the game has taken a slight hit graphically in order to maintain a high frame rate and allow up to 40 zombies on screen at once.
The game follows your typical apocalypse story of an average man caught in a zombie disaster. Your aim is to survive the hordes of zombies and save survivors in some pretty dangerous locations. You start off in your apartment and then venture out into the city in a bid to run away from the zombies and find a safe place to stay. We love the way the story is told through diary entries before each level and it justifies why your character ends up on a rooftop, in a broken down tube train and in the middle of a corn field.

N.Y.Zombies takes a slightly casual approach to the controls, with touch gestures used throughout. Dragging the screen changes your view, pinching zooms in, tapping on the weapon symbols switches your firearm and double tapping will reload them. What is surprising is that you simply tap the zombies to shoot them, no complicated aiming, just a straight-forward touch to fire. This makes the game incredibly easy to pick up, but also allows for some truly hectic gameplay as you progress through the levels.
Have a look at our video below to see the game in action. We filmed a couple of levels near the start of the campaign so the zombies may be a little slow here, but don’t worry because there’s plenty of madness in the later levels.
Killing zombies in each level earns you money which you can use to buy new weapons, and upgrade your existing ones. The amount of weapons included is huge and covers everything from a general pistol, to an M16, a chainsaw and proximity mines. You can decide which weapons you use depending on the level scenario, for example it’s likely you’ll need flares in the “Dark Lobby” level, and if you die due to a bad choice you can try again with a different combination. Not only do the level conditions affect what weapons you should use, but also the types of zombies that will occur. There are slow zombies, tumour zombies, rapid zombies and even giant zombies which take a lot of lead to take down, so you have to think carefully before playing.
We’ve really enjoyed N.Y.Zombies’ campaign and the game has a endless mode as well if you’re up for it. We played the game on the easy “Contained” difficulty but if you are a pro zombie hunter you might want to play on “Apocalypse” instead. To stretch the game’s content that little bit further there are also 20 achievements for you to earn, as well as global leaderboards. If you’re looking for a decent zombie shooter game, this is definitely the one to get.
N.Y.Zombies is exciting and exhilarating. If you’re looking for a zombie shooter game, this is definitely the one to get.
