Paranormal Agency HD (iPad)

Perhaps you’re looking for a hidden object to go with your iPad. Paranormal Agency HD fits the bill; with over 50 levels and a variety of mini-games to complete, there’s plenty of content here for your £2.99.

The main component of the game is the hidden object gameplay, which is a tried and tested formula and it works just as well here. There’s several different ways to build a game of this type but this game combines several of them; find the objects listed; find objects by their silhouette instead of by name; spot the difference between two pictures; find all objects of one type (i.e. all of the light sources in a room) and find the transparent silhouettes of unspecified objects in a room. In addition to the random junk that you have to pinpoint, there’s some cleverly hidden question marks that give you a hint when uncovered; these are often hidden better than the objects themselves.

If you have a keen eye then each puzzle shouldn’t prove too much of a challenge. You get plenty of time to complete each one, and if that’s not enough the hints are fairly generous; we found that most of the time the object was smack bang in the centre of the hint vortex that appears around one of the objects that you have to find. The mini-games exhibit the same problems; there’s no time limit or hints so you can just take them at your leisure, or even skip them altogether. The most fun of these was the re-arrange a picture, even if that was primarily because we liked the illustration.

The main problem with Paranormal Agency HD is that the presentation can be overly trite, lacking imagination and originality. The plot is not what you would buy the game for but you will cringe reading it; especially after reading the game book that we reviewed earlier today. Many of the objects are recycled from room to room, and the character models look oddly plastic, as if they were all covered in PVA glue just before their portrait was shot. But however, even though the characters and plot are paper-thin they do tie together the disparate scenes quite nicely; the delivery of the text is slower than it should be as you have speech bubbles animating in and out every time a new line is spoken. That can get tiresome.

In all, Paranormal Agency HD is a fairly good hidden object game that offers up a good amount of content for the price. However, the trite nature of the plot and recycled objects let the game down; we think that this developer can offer up a similar title that’s much better.

Grade: C, Good

A good hidden object game although somewhat on the easy side, recycling its objects fairly often.
