Spirit HD (iPad)

Review by Ben Briggs, June 22, 2010

iPad integration (About)
  • Save state: Yes
  • iPod music: Yes
  • Status bar: No

It doesn’t seem all that long ago that we were reviewing Spirit, a slickly presented iPhone game that had intuitive controls and a surprising amount of variety. None of that has changed for Spirit HD, and due to the nature of the control scheme it works even better on the iPad. With the larger surface area there’s even more enemies on the screen at once; small amoebas that make their way slowly around a small area; snake-like creatures that dart about the screen; bullet like shapes that arrive in packs and travel along a horizontal or vertical axis; laser turrets that try to hone in on your position; and spirally creatures that follow you about amongst others. You’ll find a combination of these enemies every time you play the title, but the order in which you find them in varies in each new game.

With the device resting on your legs, there’s a greater opportunity to get your fingers free to control your avatar. It feels so much open and spacious than its smaller counterpart and we enjoyed it even more than the first time around. You can get the rest of the gameplay detail from our first review; the only difference now is that OpenFeint has been added and also the iPad version allows you to play in any orientation, which is fast becoming a necessity on the new device.

Spirit HD is still as great as it ever was, and the larger screened iPad makes the game even more impressive. We don’t recommend buying both this version and the iPhone version as this one is far superior; if you already have the iPhone version then it isn’t worth getting this one as well, as it is mostly the same game. But a fantastic one, to be sure.

Grade: B, Great

Even though not a lot has changed, Spirit HD really sings on the iPad. Truly a far better alternative to its smaller predecessor.
