Super Blast is not a level-based vertical shooter, but a beautifully presented arcade game that simply has you trying to get the best score. The problem the game has is a lack of variety; you face the same four enemies over and over again, and whilst they will be in a different formation every time, they will always come from the top and if even one of them escapes you lose the game.

For better or worse, Super Blast has an incredibly simple control scheme; the ship auto-fires and you tilt left and right to move. Touching the screen unleashes an explosion that wipes all of the creeps from play, as does hitting the red enemy. Yellow enemies are faster but take less hits than the normal, green creatures and the metal encased creeps are tougher still. The only other thing that you can interact with are a couple of power-ups; a spreader and a twin laser power up, both of which are significantly better than your main gun.

It looks great but it’s not deep enough to keep you coming back for more.

The game looks to be full of variety from the App Store page, but in reality all that changes is the detailed and highly colourful background. Were it not for this fact you would get incredibly sick of facing the same enemies over and over again, but as it is you’ll want to play the game at least for a little while to see more of how the space environment unfolds. In the end though, you’ll simply tire of the game; this is far too shallow when contrasted to many of the vertical shooters available in the App Store today.

Unfortunately, Super Blast also doesn’t come with a pause button and you can’t use the home button to save your progress, so if you want to go do something else you have to finish the game first. Plus, it’s daft that a primarily tilt based game dims the screen midway through play; it’s not like you have to use the bomb all the time.

Overall, this title is frankly a waste of space. Yes, it looks great but it’s not deep enough to keep you coming back for more; even for its low price. There’s plenty of level-based shooters that will give you more for your money right now, so we can’t recommend this one.

Grade: D, Mediocre

A beautiful yet shallow game that just doesn’t compare well to other vertical shooters available today.
