Tilt to Live HD (iPad)

It seems like a long time since we reviewed Tilt to Live; we know the word is thrown about a lot, but it is one of the most addictive games for the platform. And with the passing months the game has grown and matured; updates brought three new modes, each with their own twist to the accelerometer-based gameplay. In this HD version, the newer modes are the additional content; yes, you get the superb Classic mode for free.

When we first learnt that the game was coming to the iPad we were a little apprehensive; the iPad is not as comfortable as the iPod touch to tilt around. But we knew that One Man Left did a superb job with the tilt calibration and the behaviour of the small screen version, and if anyone could make a successful accelerometer title for the iPad, they would be the guys to do it. We also thought that, possibly, they could have made a Bluetooth control facility like Chopper 2, but they didn’t.

What they did was to adapt their very successful calibration tool to the iPad and it works beautifully. Having had a few days to play this game before the launch we can categorically say that it’s the best implementation of tilt control that we’ve seen for an iPad game. Being able to set the position that you want helps immensely, both for comfort and to allow you to see all of the playing field clearly.

Happily, the game has also been expanded for the iPad; instead of enlarging assets like some iPhone to iPad ports, the levels are bigger and contain more dots that are again bent on your destruction. The Gauntlet mode has been greatly improved, with unpredictable waves of dots coming from all sides of the screen, plus new Orbs that you collect for points instead of a depleting life bar.

Tilt to Live HD also offers the same strong achievement base as its predecessor; unlike other games achievement points here translate into new, exciting weapons that you can use to your advantage in the Classic and Code Red modes. This is what ultimately helps fuel your addiction to the game; it’s certainly less addictive once everything is unlocked but is still mightily hard to put down.

With the redrawn graphics, the game looks miles better than the iPhone version. They make what was already a satisfying experience into one that feels more grown-up, more professional and more polished. Indeed, there is only one thing that we don’t like about Tilt to Live HD and that is that the game still doesn’t support save state.

As Tilt to Live HD is free to download we’re basing our recommendation on the in-app purchase which unlocks the three additional modes. Although the Classic mode is probably the strongest experience of the four we’d say that the additional modes are definitely not throw-away. Each is as professionally presented as the free mode and Frostbite especially packs a powerful punch. With each one given a different backing track and a different focus they all feel like worthwhile additions to the game, not simply a rehashed iteration of Classic mode. Furthermore, buying the in-app purchase will make the weapon unlocks possible; it’s the only way to use cool abilities such as the burnicade and the vortex.

Overall, we think Tilt to Live HD has made an outstanding transition from iPhone to iPad; not simply content with enlarging existing assets One Man Left have tweaked the gameplay so that it fits the larger screen. The tilt controls are simply excellent and furthermore, the graphical enhancements do the iPad justice. For developers looking to do an accelerometer controlled iPad game, this is your blueprint.
